The Second Lockdown
The Alcohol
Rehabilitation Center in New Delhi has
something else to discuss today rather than the topics of alcohol addiction
etc., but on the topic of the deteriorating health condition in Delhi due to
the pollution level. Delhi is India's capital and sixth most populated
Metropolis of the world. And it's going on in the news that Delhi is requiring
oxygen cylinders and masks nowadays. The Alcohol Rehabilitation Center in New
Delhi states that all these are the result of particulate matter pollution and
vehicular pollution. In May 2019 the World Health Organisation announced New
Delhi as the most polluted city in the world. The problems include
overpopulation, unlimited use of resources, scarcity of water, and heavy
pressure on the environment. The Alcohol Rehabilitation Center in
New Delhi says that this metro city is full of dust on the road and
industrial waste air. The vehicular pollution includes diesel powered City
buses and trucks, 2 wheelers and 3 wheelers with two stroke engines etc. The
people here use their private vehicles more than the public over survey says
that 10000 people here may die prematurely in Delhi because of this air
pollution.
Learning about pollution even from childhood
days is quite practical to the citizens of Delhi. Delhi is known as the heart
of India and what an irony that the same Delhi is now injurious for the hearts
of Delhiites. Delhi as being the capital of India is soon getting the privilege
of the capital of pollution too. It is becoming so due to the increasing rate
of pollution in Delhi at an alarming rate. Delhi is getting bounded by all
types of pollution i.e Air, Water, Soil or Noise.
Blaming the
urbanisation which led to such a critical condition of Delhi is pointless. Many
countries or cities around the world are much more developed than Delhi but the
pollution level in such countries is far lower than that of Delhi. Gradually
the government tried to lower the pollution by making it compulsory for Metro
as well as public transport run on CNG. Growth in vehicle number and mileage
are another reason for traffic related sources. EPCA report indicates that
particles from coal and diesel are more harmful than wind blown dust from
vehicular motion is more than that of three Metropolitan cities of Mumbai
Kolkata and Chennai all together.
NATIONAL
ENVIRONMENT ENGINEERING RESEARCH INSTITUTE reported that almost 8000 tons of
solid waste is being generated in Delhi everyday. Since there has been no
perfectly developed technology or advancement to treat solid, liquid, waste,
water Industrial and Hospital waste in the City. According to WHO, AIR
pollution is the fifth largest killing reason in India. Increase in carbon
monoxide, Nitrogen dioxide has made the environment very poor and made life of
people well, increasing various diseases.
It has
become a major concern in Delhi to reduce its pollution. Delhi is on the way to
becoming a gas chamber soon because of its harmful environmental conditions.
This critical condition has become an issue due to the continuous increase in
PM 10 and PM 2. In air due to the increase in personal vehicles, burning of
fuels, improper management of industrial waste, burning crackers etc. It's been
the dream of the 20's century kids to explore the real fog and the clear blue
sky. If this is going to continue, it's sorry to say but Delhi won't remain the
place to live in future. Even the Chief Judge of the Supreme Court is planning
to shift outside Delhi after their retirement only because of such a hazardous
level of pollution.
