Common Myths About Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
There are many rehab centres in
India, treating patients suffering from mental disorders which are usually
not taken seriously by the society. There are several rehab outlets having the
facilities of Schizophrenia Treatment in
New Delhi, Obsessive Compulsive
Disorders Treatment in New Delhi and also have the centres of Depression Treatment in New Delhi. These rehab
centres usually get various complaints and comments about various notions which
are intended to be followed by such patients, but just are societal myths.
Today, we will discuss the most commonly heard myths about the patients
suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is known to
affect almost 2.3% of India’s population. However just like the other mental
disorders, the mindset of people suffering from OCD come with a series of myths
and notions. Thus, some of the most common myths are as follows:
● People suffering from OCD always keep themselves
super organised, neat and tidy at all times: Not everyone suffering from OCD has a
tendency of keeping themselves clean and tidy at all times. However, some
patients do have a tendency to do so, but they are indeed mutually exclusive.
Even if a patient has a clenailess compulsion, they do not always enjoy such
rituals 50 times a day. However, the individual having such obsession will feel
mandated to be clean at all times. Thus, everyone does not live in a ‘super
neat world’, but some also live in a fear because of their obsession and feel
catastrophic at times that if their personal items are thrown out, where will
they stand with their anxiety issues.
● OCD is only about maintaining cleanliness: Maintaining
cleanliness can only be considered as a mere symptom of OCD, which is not
commonly seen in every OCD patient. The disorder mainly refers to a specific
presence of recurrent and persistent thought processes which are sheerly
unwanted with repetition of physical activities on the move too, with the
presence of mental act too, which can cause reduction of stress if the
obsession takes the form of action, thus terming it as compulsions. Now these
compulsions are not always related to the process of cleanliness, thus this is
an absolute myth which is followed by society.
● People suffering with OCD are considered to be
highly neurotic and upright: It is a fact that
OCD is a diagnosable mental health condition, but the relation between
neuroticism and OCD is a high misconception which is followed by society. It is
a sheer insult to call someone suffering from OCD as an absolute neurotic, as
it is a derogatory and a condescending insult for the individual which can also
cause anxiety and stress within the individual’s mind. They thus feel
humiliated because of their condition as the obsessions also at times turn into
irrational and unrealistic measures as well.
