The Addiction of Obsession

Many Rehabs in New Delhi and also several Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre in India state the addiction of obsession people have. The best thing about ‘obsessions’ is that they happen all the time and vanish away all the time too. The hackneyed word is as much a part of our lives as our daily evening gossip. Being preoccupied with one specific idea, activity, place or even person is what we define as “obsessions”. We frequently come across words like “he is obsessed with cricket” or “she is obsessed with her hair” or “they are obsessed with Avengers” etc which we treat with less attention than they deserve, since most of the time, the word is used without any apparent reason or consideration.

The Rehabs in New Delhi have quoted the definition of obsession depends mainly on how we use the word and how we interpret it. By that people judge the weight of the word. The state of “obsession” involves tremendous passion, zeal, and determination which coax a person more and more towards the direction in which his ‘obsession’ points. The greatest poets of the past centuries were ‘obsessed’ or taken in with a particular idea – Wordsworth was obsessed with ‘Nature’, Keats with ‘Beauty’, and so on. Their poems, motivated by their respective ‘obsessions’ continue to delight and enlighten us. They were regarded as the greatest poets of their time. Also, Sachin was ‘obsessed’ with cricket from a very young age which led him to enter the world of cricket. His ‘obsession’ led him to become one of the most notable cricketers of all time. He also made many international world records in cricket. I have also come across many such people who are obsessed with music, dance or any other activity and have ended up being professionals in those fields. Thus, Obsession can be considered as a good thing.

Although, obsessions in some cases can be fatal. They can vitally affect the personality and decisions of a human being. Instead of being an inspiring figure to others, they become a frenzy, and gradually madness consumes the whole of his persona. It greatly affects his conscience. Being severely obsessive not only hampers one’s mental health but also ruins him physically. It might lead to frequent panic attacks, weak personality, regular bouts of depression and anxiety, loss of appetite and in some extreme cases, it might lead to violence. They might even end up killing someone or committing suicide just for their ‘obsessions’. It is not really easy to recover from such levels of ‘obsessions’ and people end up with imbalanced mental health and suffer from other issues as well.

Thus ‘obsessions’ can be both good and bad. It depends on the intensity of our ‘obsession’. It is always good not to be too obsessed over something and to take out the better part of the word ‘obsession’ to incorporate it in our lives.
